For many years the Swedish ensemble e.s.t. was one of the most important and progressive trios on the jazz scene. Pianist and bandleader Esbjörn Svensson, bassist Dan Berglund and drummer Magnus Öström were a sensation on the live scene with their adventurous jazz compositions, bordering on pop music, filled with rock and electronics. The trio sold over a million albums and appeared to be at the zenith of their existence when Svensson died suddenly in a diving accident. Now Berglund and Öström have revived their former front man in all his glory with e.s.t. Symphony. A project in which the duo is accompanied by a symphony orchestra and like-minded young musicians such asKurt Rosenwinkel, Ibrahim Maalouf, Yuri Honing, Martin Tingvall and Yaron Herman. The modern jazz, bursting with exciting twists and turns, has remained, but in the compositions arranged by Hans Ek, e.s.t. sounds like it never did before. This was also heard during an earlier collaboration with a chamber orchestra and Pat Metheny in 2003.
