Trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson (1982) is an established name in Steve Coleman's band Five Elements. He attracted attention on the album Harvesting Semblances And Affinities recorded for Pi Records. That label is the home of the music of Steve Coleman and his kindred spirits, and Finlayson's debut album Moment And The Message was released on it in spring of this year. The trumpeter, who gained experience with Ravi Coltrane, Ralph Alessi, Vijay Iyer and Abbey Lincoln, recorded the album with his group Sicilian Defense in which guitarist Miles Okazaki (1974) plays a leading role. In addition, Finlayson's collaboration with Steve Coleman remains a cornerstone in the trumpet player's career. Their association dates back to 2000 when Coleman took the then eighteen-year-old artist under his wing. Finlayson's music is just as rhythmically complex as that of his mentor and it is marked by structures that resemble puzzles.
