Laura Mvula is the latest sensation from Great Britain. A resonant soul voice, joyful harmony and the tinkling of bells large and small; the singer-songwriter from Birmingham really has an original sound. Mvula's classical background - she studied piano, violin and composition - is evident in her use of wonderful harmonies and unexpected instruments. At the beginning of this year, her debut album Sing To The Moon received rave reviews. The Evening Standard called her "The voice of 2013" and she reached fourth place at the BBC Sound of 2013. In her music Mvula employs various influences: her father's jazz records, the gospel choirs from church and her classical background. The result is crisp, fresh soul, or "gospeldelia", as a British journalist wrote. Comparisons with Nina Simone and The Beach Boys were also made. Let's put it this way: Mvula sounds like a good-natured Nina Simone with The Beach Boys on backing vocals.
