A video clip on YouTube: three young guys transform a number of the hip hop group Odd Future into a jazz medley. Just for fun the drummer is wearing a pig mask. Millions of hits later, the three young men are known as Badbadnotgood, a trio from Toronto with a love for hip hop. Things really took off after the video. They have an enormous following on social media and have now been picked up by the mainstream music industry. The trio opened for Roy Ayers and British DJ and label-
owner Gilles Peterson has given them his blessing. The term "cover band" in no way does justice to Badbadnotgood. Matthew A. Tavares (keyboards), Chester Hansen (bass) and Alex Sowinski (drums) transform classic hip hop numbers using freaky samples, craziness and jazz. But they don't stop there; the trio has also taken on Joy Division numbers as well as theme music from the computer game Zelda.
