An electric bass guitar is not just for bass lines: you can also drum on it and play melodies. At least Larry Graham can when he has one in his hands. He began his style of playing as a teenager in his mother's band when the organist and drummer both took off, and developed it to perfection in Sly & the Family Stone. A pumping funk bass became his trademark. After collaborating with Sly Stone for six years, in 1972 he formed his own band Hot Chocolate, later renamed Graham Central Station. Afterwards, among other things, he worked for a long time with Prince who is also a guest on Graham Central Station's latest album, Raise Up (2012). The funk bassist likes challenging collaborations: at the North Sea Jazz Festival he will be performing with British slap bass icon Mark King of Level 42.
