Trumpeter Roy Hargrove (1969) was a teenager when he played at the North Sea Jazz Festival for the first time in 1987. Very nervous too, because his colleague, the famed saxophonist Frank Morgan, was acting insufferably. Thankfully, Hargrove didn't despair and he developed into a very adventurous and versatile jazz musician, who can now be called a true star. The trumpet player doesn't limit his playing to a well-defined area but has several tricks up his sleeve. With his Quintet he performs straight ahead jazz, while he opts for a funk and hip hop course with the RH Factor. With the group Crisol he explores the passion of Latin jazz, but he also likes big band jazz, as is made clear on his album Emergence (2009). In his quintet we will also encounter the energetic alto sax player Justin Robinson, a contemporary who has toured with Hargrove for many years.
