Jamaica-born Monty Alexander is a popular guest in Rotterdam. Over the past sixty years, the legendary pianist has developed into a versatile composer and bandleader. Greats like Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie, Tony Bennett and Sonny Rollins made use of his enormous talent in the past. After his debut album Alexander TheGreat in 1964, Alexander's career skyrocketed and he recorded albums with Milt Jackson and Ernest Ranglin, among others. From the mid-seventies he was triumphant with his own group in which bassist John Clayton and drummer Jeff Hamilton laid the foundations for their later success as a rhythm section duo. Alexander has had particular success in recent years with his tribute projects dedicated to the likes of Bob Marley, Tony Bennett and Nat "King" Cole.
