Over 25 years ago pianist Bob James (1939) and alto saxophonist David Sanborn (1945) made the studio album Double Vision. An instant success: they received a Grammy for the album and it went platinum. That collaboration is now followed up with the CD Quartette Humaine, which is also a tribute to the pianist Dave Brubeck, who passed away last year. At the same time, the group turned the spotlight onto the man who determined the West coast sound together with Brubeck: alto saxophonist Paul Desmond. James and Sanborn chose an acoustic approach. Bassist James Genus (1966) and veteran drummer Steve Gadd (1945) complement the quartet that will certainly not merely reproduce Brubeck hits; James and Sanborn have composed seven new pieces. The spirit of Brubeck and Desmond is present in the wonderful harmonies and lyrical improvisations. According to Bob James it's an emotional-romantic concept rather than an intellectual one.
