Saxophonist Benjamin Herman (1968) is rapidly gaining an international reputation and these days the Dutchman often plays abroad. But he is happy to make an exception for the North Sea Jazz Festival, where he debuted as a seventeen year old. Herman performs in Rotterdam virtually every year but each time he does something completely different. One year he plays swinging, screaming hard surf bop with a quartet, the next festive Latinjazz with his New Cool Collective Big Band. Herman could even join any given jazz legend for a set or two. This year he will be performing tracks from his latest album Deal live on stage. The music was written for the soundtrack of the Eddy Terstall film of the same name, a romantic comedy with an edge to it. With Deal Herman has again taken a new direction with a large ensemble including organ and strings. Romantic? Perhaps, but knowing Herman it's sure to be a party as well!
