Sax player and clarinetist David Kweksilber (1973) has played in a variety of ensembles, ranging from the Asko/Schönberg, a flexible group that performs modern-classical works with various lineups, to Benjamin Herman's party band New Cool Collective. As leader of the David Kweksilber Big Band, a 26-man free improvisation group, he has been blowing the roof off the Bimhuis every two months. In this ensemble he has brought together top musicians onàof the jazz and improvised music scenes and classical and modern musicians. In the big band, improvisation veterans like trombonist Wolter Wierbos and pianist Guus Janssen share the stage with young talents like trumpeter Sanne van Hek. Moreover, the band includes tap dancer Peter Kuit and a changing vocalist. The David Kweksilber Big Band plays its own music as well as big-band standards albeit of the groundbreaking type like the works of composer Robert Graettinger (better known as Stan Kenton).
