Saxophonist Archie Shepp is one of the jazz legends performing at this year's North Sea Jazz Festival. The 75-year-old American is known as a radical musician who is highly politically and socially aware. This first became clear back in the 1950s when he was playing with kindred spirits like Lee Morgan and Bobby Timmons. In the mid-1960s he began to collaborate with John Coltrane and in 1965 this resulted in the album Ascension. Two years later he released the groundbreaking album The Magic Of Ju-Ju with its echoes of the Afro-American tradition. This interest in African sounds has always been at the heart of Shepp's music and has led to various interesting projects. In recent years, the tenor sax player has released almost no new material, but rather has focused on live performances.
