He was the savior of soul in the nineties and the debut album of D'Angelo,Brown Sugar, is arguably the best soul recording of the hip-hop era. Sexy and smooth and yet nice and raw as well. Due in part to his enthralling concerts, D'Angelo built up a faithful following who impatiently waited for five years for his next successful album, Voodoo. Although he gave a legendary concert at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2000, nothing more happened for a long time. That is until last winter when rumors about D'Angelo began to fly. He was said to be working on a new album and to be coming to Amsterdam. The strength of the man's reputation after twelve years of inactivity was proven by the high speed at which his shows in Paradiso sold out.
