Bruut!is a four-headed jazz animal whose pleasure in playing is infectious. The band consists of Maarten Hogenhuis (saxophone), Folkert Oosterbeek (Hammond organ), Thomas Rolff (double bass) and Felix Schlarmann (drums). Dressed in suits and with a traditional lineup, these young dogs play unorthodox jazz in fast tempos and as irreverently and bawdily as possible. Hogenhuis plays sax like a man possessed, while Oosterbeek mistreats his Hammond organ in an expressive way. In between, the rhythm section just keeps on swinging. Bruut! plays jazz like it was once intended: music to dance to in rough, sweaty dives. Influences from surf music and other sixties pop genres help to create an explosive whole. Things have moved fast for Bruut! since the band was formed in 2011. Last year the quartet made its debut appearance on radio and TV and a self-titled debut album was released recently to critical acclaim. Bruut! is appearing this year for the first time at the North Sea Jazz Festival.
