The title of his most recent album says it all. From Africa With Fury: Rise is supposed to wake up the listener. Music is his means of communicating a socially engaged message to his audience. And it's not just any kind of music; it is the afrobeat with which Seun Kuti follows in the footsteps of his world-famous father, Fela Kuti. As a 27-year-old, he sings of the troubles of this decade, just like his father did as a thirty-year-old in the 1970s. It is remarkable that the son will bring along the same band that used to accompany his father: Egypt80. But his connection with the famed orchestra isn't recent, of course. As a little boy of nine he already performed with Egypt 80 as a warm-up act for his father. The hypnotizing mix of jazz, funk, and African rhythms came naturally, as did the political impact of the music. It can hardly be surprising that Seun sees afrobeat as the antidote to both corporate pop and the corrupt oil industry he feels is poisoning his country.
