Soul singer Jill Scott from Philadelphia started out as a spoken-word artist. She was discovered by The Roots drummer Ahmir Thompson (AKA ?uestlove), who invited her to join his band in the studio. Scott subsequently worked with Eric Benet, Will Smith and Common. With her debut album Who Is Jill Scott? Words And Sounds Vol. 1 she became one of the most significant representatives of nu soul. She has received several Grammy nominations, including that for Best New Artist. Her first album was followed by Beautifully Human: Words And Sounds Vol. 2in 2004, and The Real Thing: Words And Sounds Vol. 3 from 2007. Meanwhile, Scott has become a successful actress, and she has also published a best-selling volume of poetry, The Moments, The Minutes, The Hours. With her foundation Blues Babes she does a lot of charity for the underprivileged in her hometown. Her latest album, The Light Of The Sun was released in 2011.
