The North Sea Jazz Festival is familiar territory for American drummer, composer and singer-songwriter Brian Blade. Last year, he performed with Blackdub in Ahoy, and in 2000 he shared the stage with Joe Sample, David Sanborn and Richard Bona. This versatile musician from Louisiana's debut with his own band Fellowship had been two years earlier. This year he is again appearing with Fellowship. Blade (41) has played with jazz greats like Joshua Redman and Herbie Hancock and global stars like Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris and Seal. He is bringing the original lineup of The Fellowship to Rotterdam: saxophonists Melvin Butler and Myron Walden, pianist Jon Cowherd and Chris Thomas on bass. Fond memories are sure to be relived, but with a difference: due to Blade's musical development, the quintet has also evolved further. Since 2000, Blade has also been a member of the Wayne Shorter Quartet and in 2009 he had great success with his first solo album entitled Mama Rosa.
