The Nationaal Jeugd Jazz Orkest (Netherlands Youth Jazz Orchestra) could best be described as the national under-21 jazz "team". The eighteen-member orchestra consists of the best jazz musicians of the Netherlands under the age of 21. This year, they will perform a completely new selection of works, inspired by Duke Ellington; they are dynamic compositions, all written by Dutch arrangers. Guest soloists performing with the orchestra, can also be seen as fast-rising talents. Ben van Gelder has already been called the revelation of the younger generation of saxophonists and guitarist Reinier Baas was scouted as a future promise. This year, the jazz orchestra is conducted by Benjamin Herman, who needs little introduction. As an alto sax player, composer, bandleader and frontman of the New Cool Collective, among others, he has rightfully earned a regular seat in the Dutch hall of fame.
