He is not someone to specialize in just one instrument. Tyshawn Sorey (1980) is a drummer/percussionist who at times will also sit at the piano. Not so extraordinary for someone who is active as a composer and music theoretician, but who should be seen as a performer first and foremost. During recent shows in the Netherlands, Sorey proved himself to be a rather special drummer. A musician who can be energetic and powerful in his playing, but pursues other goals as well: beauty, nuance and dynamism. His compositions are characterized best by a strong accent on ensemble playing and group improvisations. "He's wonderfully responsive and reactive", according to the jazz magazine DownBeat. Tyshawn Sorey's music is at its best in a live setting with his own quartet - as will be the case at North Sea Jazz. His group (including cornet player Taylor Ho Bynum, the impressive pianist John Escreet and reed player Michael Moore) is on the lookout for completely new horizons.
