Trumpeter Tom Harrell is a true musician's musician who is acclaimed by his colleagues. Harrell was born in 1946 and has been playing the trumpet since he was eight. After graduating with a degree in composition, he was recruited by Stan Kenton's band, and he toured with them until 1969. Afterwards, he played with Woody Herman, Horace Silver, Lee Konitz and the Liberation Orchestra of bassist Charlie Haden, among others. Subsequently, he mainly performed with his own groups. Because of his beautiful playing, Harrell is a highly appreciated musician: in 2010 he was again nominated Trumpeter of the Year. Last year his latest album, Roman Nights, was released, which he recorded together with the members of his current quintet: sax player Wayne Escoffery, pianist Danny Grissett, drummer Jonathan Blake and the youthful bassist Ugonna Okegwo.
