Maybe It's due to his family relationship with John Coltrane - his aunt Alice was the wife of the saxophonist - but Steven Ellison, aka Flying Lotus, is a surprising innovative force in electronic dance music. He was embraced by the dub-step scene when he debuted in 2008, but isn't easily placed into a category. His most influential sounds are derived from the hip hop and sampling tradition, yet on his third and most recent album, Cosmogramma, he also makes use of live musicians. And it's not only electronic beat fanatics who like his work; members of guitar bands like Radiohead and the Peppers are trying to gain his favor. Everyone wants something from the man from Los Angeles. At North Sea Jazz, Ellison will be accompanied by keyboard player Dorian Concept and drummer Richard Spaven.
