Kora player Madou Sidiki Diabaté and English pianist Alex Wilson came up with the idea for Mali Latino when they met each other on a tour of Africa in 2004. The pair decided to join forces and record a song together in which South American and West African influences would bolster one another musically. Wilson, one of the UK's most successful Latin producers, lifted the project to a higher plane four years later by involving multi-instrumentalist and griot (musical storyteller) Ahmed Fofana as musical leader. When the collective decision was made to record an entire album, the building of an artistic bridge between the two continents was completed successfully. On Mali Latino (2010), the musical roots of the Malinese people in combination with the Latin American temperament deliver an energetic and funky fusion that is given an extra dimension in live performance, when the entire nine-piece band is on stage.
