Although the electric blues and captivating vocal duets of Amadou & Mariam may seem to have an unearthly beauty, they are the result of a great deal of down-to-earth hard work. The Malinese duo has traveled a long road: from the dusty streets of Bamako, to the main stages of pop festivals like Glastonbury. Both artists became blind at an early age and Amadou and Mariam met each other at an institute for the blind in Bamako in 1976. It turned out they shared a passion for music and they were soon a romantic couple as well as a musical duo. Amadou & Mariam have been local celebrities in Bamako since the mid-1980s. But it was only after they recorded their first album in Paris in 1998 that their international careers took off. The album Sous Ni Tile made the duo an instant hit in France with the rest of the world quickly following. Amadou and Mariam have since worked with stars like Damon Albarn, Manu Chao, The Smiths' guitarist Johnny Marr and David Gilmour.
