Selah Sue may look like a doll with her slim build and blond cotton-candy hairdo, but she sings like a veteran diva. The singer-songwriter was born in Leuven, Belgium, in 1989 as Sanne Putseys. She started playing the guitar and writing songs when she was fifteen. She developed her own style in which she integrated the influences of reggae, soul and hip hop. The Internet has since given her career an almost surreal boost. In 2009, Selah Sue played at the North Sea Jazz Festival and at Lowlands. She performed a duet with Cee-Lo Green (of Gnarls Barkley) on his solo album The Ladykiller, was the support act for Prince at the Antwerpse Sportpaleis in 2010, and earlier this year she won the Music Industry Award for Best Female Solo Artist. Hit producers from Los Angeles have made her offers, but the highly independent Flemish artist decided that's not her thing. In the end, she chose a small French label to record her debut album, Selah Sue.
