“Sold Out!” That is often the triumphant sign you can read at the concerts of Jean “Toots” Thielemans. Thielemans (1922) has been an institution for many years. He is best known as a harmonica player, although he has written several standards - the most successful being the hit Bluesette (1962). In addition to his unique sound, his timing, phrasing, nuances and emotion are an essential element of his musical language. The Belgian musician started his career as an accordion player; later, he took up the chromatic harmonica as well. However, he also made an impact on the guitar. Way back in 1947, Toots traveled to the US. He quickly gained a reputation in the jazz world and was a member of the famous quintet of pianist George Shearing for six years. Thielemans often played on film soundtracks (Turkish Delight, for example) and on commercials. Last year he released the CD Live, recorded with his European Quartet that is bursting with Dutch talent and with whom he will also be performing at the North Sea Jazz Festival.
