The beauty of ice: in Norway there is an entire culture surrounding ice, including an ice festival. Norwegian percussionist Terje Isungset (1964) builds an entire performance around it. Isungset started out as a swing jazz musician, later developed into a composer and has also written music for ballet and the theater. Simultaneously, he became obsessed by the possibilities nature was offering him. Wood, stone and granite turned out to be materials that could be used for his music. And: ice! The percussionist elicits incredibly atmospheric sounds from this cold substance. Isungset and his group not only draw their inspiration from the frozen material but they also play on instruments made of ice, like ice percussion and the ice drum, iceofon and ice horn. Something special: Dutch guitarist Bram Stadthouders accompanies Isungset on (ice) guitar. Terje Isungset has released several CDs, including Iceman, on Bugge Wesseltoft's hip label Jazzland. His latest album is called Meditations.
