Rubén Blades (1948) is a national hero in his homeland Panama. The singer-songwriter has dozens of hits to his name, including Patria, which became Panama's non-official national anthem. Apart from being a musician, Blades is also well known as an actor and politician. He was born of a Cuban mother and a Panamanian father. In the 1970s, he left for New York, where he ended up working in the mailroom of Fania Records. He had already started writing songs and he was soon working with artists of the label like Ray Barretto and Larry Harlow. Today, he has twenty albums and many Grammy Awards to his name. Blades plays "the thinking man's salsa": a mix of Latin American nueva cancíon and Cuban nueva trova, with experimental tempos and the politically tinted lyrics of the Nuyorican movement (an intellectual movement involving artists and thinkers who are of Puerto Rican descent). At North Sea Jazz, Blades will be accompanied by the Roberto Delgado Orchestra.
