Rutger Zuydervelt is a graphic designer by education, but as a musician he is active under the name Machinefabriek. His musical style is diverse and ranges from classical to noise and ambient, but he also makes "field recordings" on a regular basis. Zuydervelt sees Fennesz, Godspeed You! Black Emperor but especially Oren Ambarchi as his most important sources of inspiration. Machinefabriek makes various recordings on his own. His first official record Marijn appeared in 2006 with Lampse. Since that time he has brought forth a constant stream of musical productions, sometimes on his own accord, sometimes with labels like Type, 12K, Dekorder, Digitalis and Staalplaat. Machinefabriek is often invited to join art projects and theater performances. He works with artists like Aaron Martin, Peter Broderick, Simon Nabatov, Xela and Gareth Hardwick. He also performs outside the Netherlands regularly. At the North Sea Jazz Festival he will be joined by his musical partner Gareth Davis on bass clarinet.
