The Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra (RJO) is a playful big band, that continually seeks new challenges and is unafraid of adopting highly diverse styles. The orchestra was formed in 2004 under conductor Johan Plomp and mainly performs their own compositions, thus building up the European big-band tradition. Brass is well represented with no fewer than thirteen players - including trumpeter Rob van de Wouw, trombonist Louk Boudesteijn and saxophonist Bart Wirtz. The rhythm section consists of Martijn Vink (drums) and Johan Plomp (bass), among others. The orchestra's first album, Introducing, came out in 2005 and last year came its follow-up, Suite to A T, with sixteen compositions by Plomp. They will have a special guest at the North Sea Jazz Festival: New York pianist, composer and producer Jason Lindner. The New Yorker's solid groove is a new big-band sound in which hip-hop and Latin also figure. What a show it will be!
