Saying that the Spok Frevo Orquestra is the Brazilian New Cool Collective would be the same as saying Charlie Parker is the American Benjamin Herman. But it gives you an idea. Because the gentlemen of the Spok Frevo Orquestra are also smartly suited up and are equally exceptional musicians. The eighteen-man orchestra from Brazil combines the lightening-quick dance rhythms of the frevo with improvised solos from American jazz. Leader of the company is saxophonist and composer Inaldo Cavalcante de Albuquerque, a.k.a. 'Spok'. He is known as the ambassador of the "frevo". Frevo is derived from frever, to boil, as in boiling with enthusiasm. In 1996 Spok founded the orchestra Banda Pernambucana that was rechristened in 2003. After bringing lots of venues to the boil all over the world, the Spok Frevo Orquestra will be performing at the North Sea Jazz Festival this season for the very first time.
