Andy Sheppard is regarded as one of the most versatile and intriguing jazz musicians from the United Kingdom. He heard the music of John Coltrane for the first time when he was nineteen. He immediately bought a saxophone and just three weeks later he was performing with the renowned group Sphere from Bristol. Sheppard is now one of the most celebrated tenor and soprano sax players from the English jazz scene and he is one of the few soloists to have played in all three big bands of the great post-war jazz composers: Gil Evans, George Russell and Carla Bley. His latest musical tour de force is Movements in Colour, an album with an entirely new repertoire. The music is written with a great feel for melodic themes, an inventive use of structure and a faultless feel for the rhythms that determine the course of contemporary jazz. At the North Sea Jazz Festival, Sheppard will be supported by two guitarists a bassist and a tabla player/percussionist.
