Leading media like Wire, The New York Times and DownBeat acknowledge alto saxophonist Steve Lehman as an original composer, who keeps shifting the boundaries of current music. He studied under and played with Jackie McLean and Anthony Braxton, but also worked with people like Meshell Ndgeocello and Mark Dresser. His chamber music and work for large orchestras has been played by the Janacek Philharmonic, the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) as well as by the Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin. Lehman is above all an inquisitive man, and this is evident. At the North Sea Jazz Festival he will be joined by his octet, which comprises four brass players, a tuba player, a vibraphonist, bassist and drummer. His latest album, Travail, Transformation And Flow stems from 2009. The New York Times called it the number one jazz album of the year. Besides his many musical activities, Lehman teaches at Columbia University.
