Maria Markesini was born on the beautiful Greek island of Kefalonia. After graduating from the conservatory in Athens, she continued studying music at the Rotterdam Conservatory in 1988. Today, the singer also performs as a concert pianist. When an injury meant that Markesini might have to cancel a concert, she solved the problem with the greatest of ease, and to the delight of the audience, by singing jazz numbers. "You should never say this is pop, this is jazz, or this is classical. You should simply have command of all techniques." On her album Kosmo, together with bassist Richard Bona and brilliant pianist Bert van den Brink, she shows what she can do as pop and jazz singer. Boy Edgar Prize winner Van den Brink and Markesini have been a remarkable duo for some time now: two pianists, one of whom also sings!
