For years she was a background singer with Izaline Calister, Relax, Typhoon and Benny Sings, among others. Then came the day Giovanca decided to go solo as a songwriter and soul singer. Benny Sings would be responsible for the production. Her debut album Subway Silence (2008) immediately attracted attention. Critics and audience alike fell for her bouncy, chipper songs and warm singing voice. She was nominated for an Edison and won the Laren Jazz Award and the 3FM Talent Award. Now it's being followed up with While I'm Awake. For her first album, Giovanca was inspired by everything she saw in the subway, this time it's long waking nights that were a source of inspiration for many lovely songs. Those on While I'm Awake are more melancholic and personal, although singer-songwriter Giovanca will never become gloomy. The duet Where Love Lives stands out, with none other than Marvin Gaye producer Leon Ware.
