Having their own orchestra is the dream of many jazz musicians. Valve trombonist/composer Bob Brookmeyer (1929) is one of the lucky few whose dream came true. This legendary jazzman is still very active, among other things, as the inspiration behind the New Art Orchestra that he set up in Europe in 1994 as a vehicle for his compositions. The orchestra was nominated for a Grammy Award for the album Spirit Music (2006). Brookmeyer was a musician from his early years, when, aged fourteen, he wrote his first arrangements for a dance orchestra. Jazz lovers know him as the replacement for Chet Baker in Gerry Mulligan's band but that is only a footnote in his long career. He also worked with greats like Claude Thornhill, Stan Getz, Jim Hall and Bill Evans. Brookmeyer is considered one of the best composers/arrangers in his genre. In recent years, he has been working as Professor of Composition at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.
