Britain's Jamie Lidell doesn't like his musicality to be pinned down. He loves to play funk like Prince as well as to groove like Luther Vandross. Anything goes on the albums of the 36-year-old singer who also likes to experiment with samples and instruments. In 2005, his international breakthrough came with Multiply and three years later with JIM (2008) he showed the world his introverted soul side. On Compass (2010) he again opens up a world of sounds. Under the expert production direction of the king of sampling, Beck, the title of the album is more than a mere metaphor: the music is richly illustrated and takes off in almost every direction, particularly in live shows. Lidell visits every point on his musical compass. His music is marked by and embellished with creative originality. Not to be missed by lovers of soul, funk and beats at this North Sea Jazz Festival.
