Joshua Redman is always a much-loved guest at North Sea Jazz, because of his excellent sax playing and also because he is a representative of a new course. Although he is not known as a modernist, Redman, like no other, is able to shed a new light on tradition. He started his career in a quartet but soon broke with this trend by choosing for a trio. In 2002 he releases the trio album Elastic, followed by Yaya3 in the same year. On his memorable Back East from 2008, he again investigates the jazz culture of the threesome and in 2009 he further explores the horizons of the three-man formation. Redman broadens the perspective and experiments with double drums and bass: a double trio. The result is both refreshing and astounding. Redman's open and balanced handling of his instrument takes up all the available space in the musical web that unfolds in this newly founded formation.
