One of the most remarkable collectives of the past couple of years is that of rapper Typhoon and the New Cool Collective. The engaging rhythms of this MC from Zwolle, the Netherlands, sometimes clash with the joyful sounds of Holland's most famous jazz orchestra. This makes for a rather sultry but most of all exciting sound. The album Chocolade (2009), on which Giovanca and Typhoon's Fakkelbrigade also perform, is a very good example of this tension. Benjamin Herman's band puts the emphasis mainly on swing, while Typhoon gives it all an edge with his sharp lyrics and social commentary. Live on a stage, this sweet-and-sour crossover is even more pronounced. If you want to be surprised by an inspirational set of freestyle hip-hop and improvised swing jazz, you shouldn't miss this unique combination at North Sea Jazz.
