This 31-year-old pianist from Brooklyn is extremely versatile and productive. Jason Moran is an adventurous band leader and composer who likes to cross boundaries. He takes his inspiration from visual artists and philosophers. The result is jazz music that rewards experienced listeners with a great deal of beauty. Moran has worked with Cassandra Wilson, Greg Osby and Steve Coleman, but impresses most with his own ambitious work. Artist In Residence is the most recent of his eight albums. All his works have been commissioned. Rain is a composition for sextet commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center. Moran composed Milestone with his wife who also sings the soprano vocals. "I don't want to be pinned down, but I do want to be understood. I believe audiences want drama, challenges and recognition. And all this can be combined," says Moran. Music for connoisseurs.
