Phase Five, a vocal pop album based on instrumental hardcore jazz, is the result of the collaboration between jazz saxophonist
Yuri Honing and producer
FLORiS. For this record, Honing scrutinized the 30 or so albums he has made until now. From it, the Edison-winner collected fragments that were skil fully mixed into new projects by FLORiS, Room Eleven's producer. He cut and pasted the recordings and made loops, giving Honing's work a new dimension. Subsequently, vocalists like Lilian Vieira, Janne Schra and Sarah Bettens contributed by writing songs based on these loops. These songs inspired the sax player, in his turn, into playing brand new solos that give the album his own stamp. Throughout his career, Honing has been seeking to extend the boundaries of jazz. He sees the genre like a language that is open to inspirational musicalen counters. With FLORiS, who used to be a producer of house music, he has succeeded once again.
