The American bassist
Scott Colley grew up in Los Angeles and studied at the California Institute for the Arts in that city. The musician moved to New York where he started working with vocalist Carmen McRae. He also became an accompanist of stars like Roy Hargrove, Dizzy Gillespie and Art Farmer. In 1997, the bassist debuted with the album
Portable Universe. In the past ten years he released some six more CDs. Colley's playing is characterized by powerful bass lines, clear language and an extremely well-developed sense of swing. Famed names like Herbie Hancock, Andrew Hill and Jim Hall have gratefully used his talents these last years. Because of this, the much sought-after sideman has been active at the North Sea Jazz Festival for many, many years. On Friday he will play with Dhafer Youssef and Toots Thielemans; on Saturday with Tineke Postma. Colley has performed on over 100 records and continues growing with an explosive force. His latest album,
Architect of the Moment, came out in 2007. On Sunday he will perform at the festival with his own quartet for the first time.
