This is how the talented singer
Sabrina Starke (1979) was described in Jazzism: 'A striking voice, a unique and impressive repertoire, an engaging personality, a thorough and sensible approach and, most of all, an original sound that is not easily categorized.' She was born in Suriname but came to the Netherlands as a small child. At home, she heard a lot of music by the pop stars of the 80s: Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, and Michael Jackson… Even before her tenth birthday, she was captivated by the swing beat that was very popular in those times. She sang with the Rotterdam reggae group Equal, won a talent contest and even performed at the Apollo Theater in New York. She went on to win second prize in the genre singer-songwriter in the 2006 'Grote Prijs van Nederland' (Holland's biggest national music concourse for popular music). Two years later, she received the Edison Award for the best newcomer in the Netherlands. Starke recently released her first album on the Blue Note label:
Yellow Brick Road. She will present the content of this album extensively at North Sea Jazz.
