At the beginning of the 60s, pianist
McCoy Tyner (1938) made his name in the legendary quartet of John Coltrane. People kept comparing his later work with the groundbreaking records he used to make with Coltrane. Tyner's career did follow a very diverse course, though. He made a number of great albums for Blue Note and performed as an accompanist with other artists. Even with Ike &Tina Turner. After 1972, he made beautiful records and over the years his musical horizon became even wider. Tyner performed in a great variety of ensembles, including a big band, he got involved in the music of Africa, India and the Arabic countries and also studied European classical music. He won't have many difficulties in entering into a clever musical conversation with the single-minded guitarists
Bill Frisell and
John Scofield. Undoubtedly Tyner will play pieces from his latest CD,
Guitars (2008), on which John Scofield and Marc Ribot can also be heard. And one never knows who else will join them, that particular Sunday evening in the Hudson…
