The flood of contemporary, young fado singers is unstoppable. And
Mariza - with her striking hairdo - is one of those on the move. In 2001, her debut album
Fado Em Mim was released and she subsequently received a prize from the BBC. In the albums that followed, Mariza chose for an honest and traditional setting. Fado with a twist, that's how you could translate the title of her second album
Fado Curvo. Music that sticks closely to tradition (the presence of Amalia Rodriguez can still be felt) while on the other hand it contains all kinds of contemporary elements. Mariza now has a long series of CDs to her name, the most recent of which is entitled
Terra. She remains firmly rooted in tradition but is weaving evermore new components into her music, with great feeling and subtlety. A continuing quest for balance without Mariza ever denying her roots; that's her music.
