Jazz and classical music sometimes seem to be on opposite sides ofthe musical spectrum. Little more than amiably greeting each other from afar. Or is that a prejudice? Saxophonist Dick de Graaf and trumpet player Gerard Kleijn believe just that. In their music, they seek the places where jazz and modern classical music intersect. This all happens in the
CLAZZ Ensemble, a 'small bigband' whose members come from both the jazz and classical music scenes. The album
Adventures has just been released. Dick de Graaf: 'Since 2003, I had been busy with a cross-over between jazz and classical music. I see jazz as a friendly reception room for music visitors from every corner of the world. It enriches you, you get unpredictable forms.' For CLAZZ, contemporary composers were approached, particularly of jazz and contemporary written music.Composition assignments were given to, among others, David Dramm, Michael Moore, Ilja Reingoud, Jacob ter Veldhuis and Konrad Koselleck.
