The Dutch drummer
Han Bennink recognizes no limits. 'My ultimate goal is to record an album using only a matchbox', he recently announced. His talent for interaction and an ever-present drive for innovation are unparalleled. Limits in jazz do not exist forBennink and that's mainly the reason why he has played with the world's giants, everywhere across the globe. In the 1960s, he was asked to play with Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins. In that period he also frequently performed with other Dutch free spirits like pianist Misha Mengelberg and saxophonist Willem Breuker. For the first time in his long career, Bennink is now presenting his own trio. In Rotterdam, the drummer will take to the stage with tenor saxophonist Joachim Badenhorst and pianist Simon Toldam Rosengren. He got to know these musicians last year at the Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music in Canada. Trumpeter and composer
Dave Douglas led the workshop and will also be coming to the North Sea Jazz Festival. Bennink is looking forward to performing with the trio: 'I want us to be really well prepared andI will even rehearse with this trio - something I normally never do!'
