The Swiss avant-garde singer Erika Stucky occupies a special place among vocalists. She is an excellent accordionist and as a singer she uses the entire spectrum of vocal techniques including whistling, blowing and imitating a trumpet. The San Francisco-born singer grew up on a Swiss mountain top, where she listened to music varying from Frank Zappa to The Monkees. It's hard to imagine a bigger contrast but this choice is typical of the music Stucky selects for her largely humor-injected repertoire. Pop songs are given a cabaret-like interpretation when Stucky sings them. Currently the singer who has been compared to Bobby McFerrin and Sheila Jordan, once again has something special under her hat. Earlier this year she performed brilliantly as a modern yodeler in a remarkable film about yodeling in Switzerland directed by Stefan Schwietert: Heimatklänge. The art of yodeling in all its forms.
