As one of the few horn players, Ferdinand Povel is an absolute ace on both the alto and tenor saxophone. He is, of course, in the first place a tenor player and one of Europe's greatest at that. And given that in his career Povel has always concentrated on jazz education, almost all upcoming tenor stars are indebted to him in one way or another. The alto sax has always been more than a side instrument for Povel. In the famous Dutch radio big band The Skymasters he always played lead alto. Povel's musical partnership with the American trumpeter John Marshall has lasted quite some time now. At the turn of the century, Povel played on Marshall's excellent CD Theme of No Repeat, and they have toured Europe with great success for many years with their quintet Ferdinand Povel/John Marshall European Quintet. Supported by pianist Rob van Bavel, bassist Frans van Geest and drummer Guido May they play bebop that still sounds as fresh today as when the style was first played.
