Although his artistic ancestry is the traditional music of his birth country Senegal, Youssou N'Dour has always looked for newer forms of expression. This is what makes him one of the most interesting West-African artists, who doesn't only know how to make beautiful, passionate music but is also responsible for intense, sensitive lyrics sung in French, English or the Senegalese Woolof. N'Dour became widely known for his astounding performance as a support act for the Peter Gabriel Tour in 1987. Gabriel also invited the singer for the duet In Your Eyes on the album So. He was able to reach a larger audience with the song 7 Seconds that he sang together with the Swedish singer Neneh Cherry. This success paved the way for the discovery of all his earlier music too. Born in Dakar, the musician is called the "King of Mbalax" in his own country; this refers to his musical style: an amalgam of traditional Senegalese rhythms with jazz, pop and Caribbean rhythms. In 2005 he received a Grammy for the album Egypt and his more recent Rokku Mi Rokka entered the Rolling Stone album Top-50 of 2007.
