Pianist, composer, arranger, orchestra leader and teacher Rob Madna always followed his instincts in his career and distanced himself from rules and expectations. He had little interest in studio work or live recordings and he referred to them as "snapshots". As a child Madna never bothered with things like practicing scales. 'You have to learn jazz the way a child learns to talk', was his opinion. Madna died in 2003. The Dutch Jazz Orchestra, one of the leading jazz orchestras dedicated to documenting the rich troves of jazz material, will perform a special tribute to this influential pianist who was the orchestra's leader in its early days. Madna set great store by composing and arranging for big bands. In recent years, his legacy has been researched: the result is the double CD Dutch Jazz Orchestra - The music of Rob Madna. The Dutch Jazz Orchestra will play several pieces with saxophonist Ferdinand Povel as well as some pieces of Rob Madna's funk band with Marcel Serierse, Theo de Jong, Karel Boehlee, Rob van Bavel, and Tom Beek.
