Dutch jazz will never be more Dutch than the free music of the Willem Breuker Kollektief. In the sixties Breuker cried "revolution" on the bebop scene. The establishment had to be removed. And it happened. Breuker blew a fresh wind over the landscape, through his clarinets and saxophones, and it was bleak and eclectic. His Willem Breuker Kollektief, founded in 1974, has the size of a small big band. Their musical basis is the very characteristic music of Willem Breuker and beside this their repertoire also contains remarkable compositions by members of the collective who also write music. The WBK unites ecstatic free jazz with somber, theatrical and ironic music in the style of Kurt Weill. But there's always something to laugh about in Breuker's circus that has been touring the country for over thirty years.
